Flash Animation and Games

Flash & ActionScript 3

I love working with ActionScript 3, the potential it holds combined with other languages is fantastic. The functionality of AS3 is fantastic and is by far my favourite area within web development. Here are some animations and games I’ve created. Please note that you need flash player 9 as a minimum requirement to play any games.

Can you get yourself into the top 10 on the ATAI:Shield High Score table!

Hall of Fame

  1. ATAI:Shield - Weapon Earth

  2. Type : Flash Game

The founding basis of this game is to have AI controlled by audio. Essentially each level is controlled by an mp3. Therefore the player is competing against a song. The audio is monitored and triggers enemies and missiles at specific points both in location and in time. The player has the option to submit their score to the live world ranking table.

Please note that low bandwidth internet connections may cause slow loading times.

  2. Type : Flash Game

I developed this game as a test to myself... what could I create in a week? Sometimes larger projects can be slow progress. I found this strangely therapeutic! The game was created in 1 week, the menu and sound assets were done when I had a spare hour here and there.

The driving force behind this game is to create a sense of tension whilst playing the game. I've tried to do this through the background music. I've also tried to create a personality for the game. This is done via a computerised voice representing the maze creator, this is used to illustrate the gamer's progress throughout the game, hopefully enticing them to play again!

  2. Type : Flash Game

Inspired by the Goldfrapp Single "Rocket". I wanted to create a game that was fun to play with only a "one button control" method. By creating this boundery, it forces you to be creative in how the game operates.

The hypothetical aim of the project was to create a promotional flash game that could coinside with a single. Therefore the game needed to be instictive to play, not frustrating and allow any user to progress through it quickly. Thus allowing them to hear the song in full after a couple of goes. The by product of this is that the game has a short shelf life in terms of drawing the player back again and again, as they will have completed it within the first few goes. However by this time they will have heard the single enough to have it stuck in their head!

  2. Type : Flash Game

After searching online for examples of Space Invaders built with Flash, I decided to try to create a more authentic representation of the origional in terms of game play and feel. Many versions out there look similar but don't behave in the correct manner. For those who remember the original I hope you feel this is acurate.

As part of my lecturing, I decided to use Space Invaders as an example project to teach OOP with AS3. Whilst the game appears simplistic at first glance, there are in fact many intricases that make the game so enjoyable to play. From the way the enemies move in waves to the sound adding tension as they get closer the player's ship. It suprises me how addictive the game still is, which is amazing considering it was developed in 1978.

  2. Pixel Fuel Logo

This animation was created to advertise my company (Pixel Fuel Ltd) at the start of a flash game when loaded. However I decided to remove the animation as it was too long before getting to the actual game.

  3. Big Monster Vs Little Monster

This short animation was done as part of a project for my Web Design & Development Diploma at Qantm College.

The characters were based on two characters from an old Eidos game called Herdy Gerdy. Every element of the characters has been created in flash.

  4. Cowboy Speech

This intro was done for a western prototype flash game I developed.

The mouth animation is done through 8 seperate frames. Calling each frame for the sounds is a fairly quick process once you have the mouth shapes created.

  2. Addidas Slopestyle 2006

This video is taken from the Adidas Slopestyle 2006 in Saalbach Austria. An amazing competition with some insane north shore drop offs!

  3. Snow Cuts

is a highlights reel from a video I did in Tignes, France 2003. The full film was 90mins and interviewed staff over the winter season, trying to capture the atmosphere of being a seasonnaire.
